Graduation portraits don't have to look like traditional graduation portraits.
For her college graduation session, Anissa wanted something that felt artistic, personal, and timeless rather than the typical cap-and-gown photos. Together, we created a moody editorial-inspired portrait session inside Ken Sanders Rare Books, one of Salt Lake City's most iconic and unique locations.
Nestled in downtown Salt Lake City, Ken Sanders Rare Books is filled with towering shelves, vintage volumes, and rich wood tones that instantly transport you into another world. It was the perfect setting for a graduate who wanted her photos to feel sophisticated, creative, and deeply connected to her love of learning.

Instead of traditional graduation attire, Anissa chose a flowing ivory gown that added movement and elegance to every image. The soft fabric contrasted beautifully against the dark wood bookshelves and rows of rare books, creating portraits that feel both modern and timeless.
As she wandered through the bookstore, reading between the shelves and pausing among stacks of books, the session took on a cinematic quality. Every corner offered another opportunity to create something unique. Some images feel quiet and contemplative, while others showcase dramatic movement as her gown swept across the floor between the aisles.

One of my favorite things about this session is how perfectly it reflects this season of life. Graduation marks the end of one chapter and the beginning of another, and there couldn't have been a more fitting location than a bookstore filled with stories. Surrounded by thousands of books, Anissa celebrated the years of dedication, growth, and hard work that brought her to this milestone.

The beauty of graduation portraits is that they can be completely customized to reflect who you are. While traditional campus photos are always a wonderful option, choosing a meaningful location can transform your session into something even more personal. For Anissa, that meant creating images that felt like pages from a classic novel—elegant, thoughtful, and full of possibility.

Ken Sanders Rare Books provided the perfect backdrop for this vision. The historic atmosphere, endless bookshelves, and warm textures created a setting unlike anywhere else in Salt Lake City. Combined with editorial styling and intentional storytelling, the final images feel less like traditional graduation photos and more like artwork.

If you're graduating from college and looking for unique graduation portraits in Salt Lake City, don't be afraid to think outside the box. Your graduation photos should celebrate not only what you've accomplished, but also who you are.

Whether your dream session takes place in a bookstore, an art gallery, a studio, the mountains, or somewhere meaningful to your story, I'd love to help you create something unforgettable.
